Through the
International Conventions, the European citizens not resident in Spain and in
possession of a regular document of
sanitary assistance (mod. E111 or European
health insurance card released by the local authorities), can take advantage of
out-patient cares, hospital refuges and pharmaceutical assistance.
As a EU
citizen, if you unexpectedly get sick during a temporary stay in a foreign
countries, whether it is a for a vacation, job or study, you have the right to immediate
medical cares. You also enjoy the same rights of the insured people in the
country in which you find yourself.
The
financing system foreseen by the European regulation establishes that, to free
receive free medical cares in Spain, is necessary that the fellow countryman
presents to the Spanish sanitary structures a "documentation" stating
his/her right to receive the same services as the home country.
If you are
not sure of your rights and desire to verify them before receiving the cares,
you can turn to your local institution, that will help you understand if you
have right to the reimbursement and if there is any maximum provided.
If you
don't have the health card with you, or you’re not able to use it (for instance
for the private assistance), you have the right to the cares however, but you
are immediately required to pay and to ask the reimbursement when you return
home. In some countries the European health insurance card is released together
with the national security card, while in others it it is necessary to ask for it.
The card is free of charge. Ask for it to the local authorities before the
departure.
The card is
not suitable for lifesaving operations and repatriation. If you want to ask for
the free transfer in your country in case of serious accident or serious
illness while you find yourself in another country of the EU, you will need a specific
private insurance. The card doesn't cover the private sanitary assistance or
the sanitary costs of the cares programmed in another country of the UE.
