7 Things Not to Do in Formentera

With today’s post, we want to suggest which activities and behaviors to avoid in Formentera, so you can fully enjoy the beauty this island has to offer—while respecting the environment and the people around you.
1. Always going to the same beach
Formentera’s beaches are among the most beautiful in the world, and it would be a real shame to visit the same spot over and over again. Forget the names and maps—go out and explore the island! Let yourself be amazed by the stunning colors and natural shapes that define this little slice of paradise.
2. Only eating Italian food
It's well known that Italians are great cooks, but the Spanish are not far behind. Formentera offers delicious options for all tastes—from sushi to grilled meat—and it’s worth trying some dishes crafted by the island’s talented local chefs. Whether it’s an ensalada payesa or a plate of chipirones, don’t miss the chance to savor the real flavors of Spain and Formentera.
3. Bringing too much luggage
Forget about 20kg suitcases! A carry-on bag—or at most, one suitcase for two people—is more than enough for a week-long vacation. After all, your main concern should be hitting the beach—and you don’t need many clothes for that! Jokes aside, try to travel as light as possible so you can move around easily during transfers and avoid being exhausted before even reaching the island.
4. Only going out in Es Pujols
The nightlife in Es Pujols is definitely lively, with bars, parties, and clubs animating this small town’s promenade, always full of people eager to have fun. However, Formentera has much more to offer… Visit all the villages at least once: the hippie market of La Mola, the colors and vibe of La Savina, the breathtaking sea views in Es Caló. Some feelings can’t be put into words—you have to experience them yourself. Try it and see!
5. Leaving trash on the beach
Enjoying Formentera’s coastline is a real pleasure, but be careful not to leave behind piles of waste that could ruin this wonderful setting. If you plan to eat on the beach, bring a plastic bag so you can collect all your trash and dispose of it later. The same goes for cigarette butts—don’t put them out in the sand, as cigarette filters take 10 years to fully decompose. Even small actions like these make a big difference when tens of thousands of people are visiting the island.
6. Not booking transportation in advance
Many people arrive in Formentera without renting a vehicle, and it’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make! Especially during July and August, rental places run out of scooters and cars quickly. We always recommend booking online—it’s usually cheaper (the myth that it’s cheaper at the port is completely false) and definitely faster upon arrival. You’ll also be able to choose the best option for your needs in peace, instead of wandering under the scorching sun with your luggage in search of a last-minute solution.
7. Driving under the influence
For your safety and that of others, never drive if you’ve consumed any type of substance. Remember that the legal blood alcohol limit here is 0.25 g/l—half the limit in Italy—and drug use is strictly prohibited. Moreover, if you’re caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you could face a fine of €1,000—not exactly the best way to spend your vacation money. Always respect traffic rules, like wearing a helmet on scooters and paying for parking in designated blue zones.
